Deep Mediation

  1. For most people, twenty minutes is the best duration for a meditation session. It is done twice per day, once before the morning meal and the day’s activity, and then again before the evening meal and the evening’s activity.
  2. A word on how to sit for meditation: The first priority is comfort. It is not desirable to sit in a way that distracts us from the easy procedure of meditation.
  3. 3. For our practice of deep meditation, we will use the thought I AM. This will be our mantra. We can also spell it AYAM. (Note: Personally, I’m using the similar Sanskrit word “aum”. All Yogani asks is that you keep it simple.)
  4. While sitting comfortable with eyes closed, we’ll just relax. We will notice thoughts, stream of thoughts. That is fine. We just let them go without minding them. After about a minute, we gently introduce the mantra.
  5. Whenever we realize we are not thinking the mantra inside any more, we come back to it easily.
  6. As soon as we realize we are off into a stream of thoughts, no matter how mundane or profound, we just easily go back to the mantra. Like that. We don’t make a struggle of it. The idea is not that we have to be on the mantra all the time.
  7. Thoughts are a normal part of the deep meditation process. We just ease back to the mantra again. We favor it. Deep meditation is going toward, not pushing away from.
  8. No struggle. No fuss. No iron willpower or mental heroics are necessary for this practice. All such efforts are away from the simplicity of deep meditation and will reduce its effectiveness.
  9. When we realize we have been off somewhere, we just ease back into the mantra again. We are reading it inward with our attention to progressively deeper levels of inner silence in the mind.
  10. This cycle of thinking the mantra, losing it, and coming out into a stream of thoughts is a process of purification. It is very powerful, and will ultimately yield a constant experience of inner silence in our meditation and, more importantly, in our daily activity.

Why are there 108 beads on a mala?

What is the significance of 108 on my mala beads?
The number 108 is significant for so many reasons.

Some believe there are 108 stages on the journey of the human soul, while others associate the possibility of enlightenment with taking only 108 breaths a day, while in deep meditation.

No matter who you ask, the answer will most likely be different each time.

The truth is — the significance of 108 beads on your mala is open to interpretation. Which we love.

As mala beads were traditionally created to be used as a tool in meditation, we like to associate it with the ideals of meditation.

However — we believe mala beads are also beautiful mediums to set intentions, manifest, and generally feel good. You don't have to meditate on the beads, although that's what they are made for in a practical sense.

Our malas are handknotted between each seed and gemstone, allowing one to chant their mantra — a sound or string of words — and keep track of were they are.

Our mala necklaces all reflect the number 108. Almost all of our malas have 108 beads, while some have 216 (double), or 54 (half).

Here are some more popular reasons behind the 108 mythology in mala beads.

Chakras
One of our favourite explanations for having 108 beads on a mala is related to the chakras (the seven energy points in our body).

It has been said there there are 108 energy lines connecting to the heart, with one of them believed to be the path to self realization.

Mantras
When using your mala beads in meditation and chanting your mantra, some have said you are complete once you have done it 100 times. The 8 extra beads are to account for errors. Or even more beautiful, are meant to be an offering to your guru.

Letters
Many choose to recite their mantra in sanskrit, the ancient script of India. Within the Saksrit alphabet there are 54 letters. Each letter has a feminine and masculine version — totalling 108.

Quality over Quantity: 4 Tips to Help You Meditate Effectively

Sometimes we put a lot of pressure on ourselves around our meditation practice, feeling frustrated we can't "get it right" ... This article gives some helpful advice on how to practice effective meditate despite our busy lives (and thoughts!)

effective meditation

Use these meditation practices to intensify your focus, stimulate the flow of life-force energy, silence the mind and much more.

Focus on quality over quantity. You don’t have to spend hours every day in meditation. 10 minutes of intense focus is better than an hour of frustrated fidgeting and internal battles. If you can only manage a few minutes of focus at a time, you’re still benefiting, and you’ll be more likely to come back to the practice the next day if you leave it on a positive note.

1. Posture

The traditional cross-legged meditation position has several advantages. For most people, using a meditation cushion is beneficial as it positions the hips higher than the knees, preventing circulation problems.
  • It provides a stable foundation that allows for the free flow of energy through the seven chakras in the body (chakras are energy centers; blocked chakras result in a host of physical and psychological problems).
  • It allows your spine to be upright yet supple. Sitting with proper posture allows for open breathing and doesn’t constrict any blood flow. Ironically, sitting upright with your spine curved naturally takes far less muscular effort than sitting hunched over or stiff as a board!
  • If your knees protest at sitting cross-legged, try doing it on a softer surface like a couch or bed; or, sit in a chair with your feet flat on the ground and spine unsupported by the back of the seat. You can also meditate lying down on a yoga mat, but beware, it’s very easy to doze off in this position!
  • Your hands can rest on your thighs, or you may wish to use one of several “mudras” or hand positions to stimulate the flow of energy. One popular mudra involves putting your dominant hand palm up in your lap and then putting your non-dominant hand on top of it, also palm up so that the dominant hand cradles the non-dominant hand. Lightly touch the thumbs together.
Let whatever happens, happen.

2. Intention

Meditation is a process of self-discovery. It can, and will, teach you the inner workings of yourself, but only if you are willing to let go of timelines, agendas and hurry.
The process of self-discovery is not always easy. The discipline you need to sit silently and observe your thoughts (or silence them entirely) can be an exercise in frustration. Disempowering ways of thinking will come into your awareness, and they are uncomfortable and unpleasant. But, once these thought patterns are identified, they become easy to discard.
Therefore, set your intention to simply be an observer of whatever happens. Don’t try to control your breathing or to force yourself into immobile stillness if you’re fidgety. Observe, allow and be interested in your inner workings, many of which are manifested in physical sensations! What’s going on inside is truly fascinating!
Don’t expect anything, just be open to what will unfold. Simply observe. That’s all. Let whatever happens, happen. Don’t judge what’s happening, and don’t worry about whether you’re “doing it right.” You are meditating correctly if you are aware of what is happening within you.

3. Focus

Pick a point of focus. It could be a mantra, an object (physical or mental image of something), music or your breath. Having some point of focus will help you keep your mind from wandering so that gradually you develop amazing mental self-mastery.
Use this very effective technique to deal with thoughts that arise: If your mind is very busy, you might have a torrent of thoughts vying for your attention and it might seem impossible to slow the rush. Practice a “catch and release” technique where you become aware of a thought, and let it pass without becoming entangled in it.
Imagine yourself sitting at a cafe on a busy city street, watching traffic and people move by. Imagine your thoughts to be the hustle and bustle of the city. You see a taxi and watch it drive past you and out of sight; you see an interesting person and watch him walk by; you see a pigeon, a bus, a cyclist… and since you’re only observing, you don’t stop them so they can interact with you. Do the same with your thoughts. Observe without reacting to them in any way. Even if you have an unpleasant thought about your ex, just think, “I’m having a thought about my ex” and let it drift away.
To silence your thoughts entirely takes practice. You can do this through breath focus as well as a simple command, “Be still.” As you focus on the marvelous experience (the miracle!) of the breath, your mind will wander. When it does, acknowledge the thought and immediately bring your attention back to your breath with a “Be still” command. It will take time, but you’ll notice that the moments of pure silence get longer and more frequent.

meditators4. Practice

The best way to get the most out of a meditation practice is to set aside time daily for it. It need not be a lengthy meditation – just 15-30 minutes of “me time” is plenty. One of the best ways to ensure you can fit it into even the busiest schedule is to wake up 30 minutes early and go meditate before you do anything else – a peaceful way to start the day.
You can take a meditation practice along with you as you go about your day. Anytime you find yourself in a stressful situation, use a countdown to get yourself into a meditative state very quickly – this will soothe you, prevent emotions from escalating, minimize the “fight or flight” response, and give you a chance to gather your thoughts so you can respond rather than react.
Over time, you’ll get to know your inner mental and emotional workings very well, and you’ll gain mastery over your thoughts, enabling you to make choices that are aligned with what you want in life.

7 Meditation & Mindfulness Practices for a Busy Life

zen business people in forest
How can we possibly find time to meditate or practice mindfulness in our busy lives?  Among all the chaos it is hard to keep up with life let alone find time to meditate and practice ‘being in the now.’
Well, we have found 7 ways to make this practice part of your everyday life without changing around your schedule!
1. In the Shower
meditation-shower-bath-waterfallWhenever you take a bath or a shower use this time to cleanse your energy.  Take some deep breaths and visualise the water washing all of the stress and negative energy away.  This can be a powerful technique for balancing your chakras and feeling great.  Practice slowing down your breathing and feel the amazing power of the water.
If you have seen our spirit science video on water maybe you can also practice sending love energy to the water or put healing crystals near the faucet so that the water coming through your house is cleaned energetically too.

2. Tea & Drinks
If you drink any sort of herbal or natural beverage try slowing down.  Take the time to savor the many smells and flavors of the drink.  Take the time to breathe slowly, reflect, meditate and really be aware of that moment in your life.  Visualise the healing that comes when you fill your body with good healthy fluids.
3. Eating with Awareness
eat-more-slowly_OMTimes_bigstock-Portrait-of-a-fit-healthy-hisp-32284502Each little flavor, color and smell is a whole new adventure.  Slow down and see if you can identify all of the ingredients.  Observe the impulse to eat specific foods and the impulse to eat fast.  Slow down your mind and ask yourself why you feel those things.
Imagine the healing effects that your food will have on your body.  Are you giving your body what it needs to feel whole, stay healthy and thrive?  Observe the taking in of energy.  This food is the basics that feed your body, mind and soul.
4. Waiting in Line
200330172-002-e13498986618431Waiting anywhere can be a great place to begin meditating.  Slow everything down in your mind.  Observe the people or objects around you.  Take in the beauty and observe your feelings.
If you are safe to do so, close your eyes half way and take a deep breathe.  Go inside yourself mentally and focus on your breathing.  Observe the amazing chemical exchange going on inside your lungs with each breath.  Oxygen to carbon dioxide over and over.
5. While Walking
walking-in-fallWalking can be a similar meditation to waiting in line.  It can also be a good tool for people who struggle to sit still.  When your body is distracted with the movement of walking, get your breathing in a good rhythm with your feet and clear your mind.
Recognise that everything in your path is there for a reason.  If they weren’t supposed to be there they would have come earlier or left later.  Those people are there in that moment on purpose.  Take the time to smile, send loving energy to others and even strike up a conversation with someone.
6. Stretching or Exercising
stretch-at-officeIf you have a Yoga, Stretching or Exercising practice every day this is the perfect time to meditate.  Let your body do its thing while you practice your deep breathing, slowing down your mind and observing the world around you.
If you don’t have a regular practice take some time to at least stretch each day.  You can do this while waiting for your morning coffee to brew, while waiting for your ride to come for work or while watching a movie at home.  There are many times where we can stretch and keep our body loose and receptive while also practicing meditation.
7. Before Sleeping & Help Sleeping
o-MEDITATION-facebookEach night before bed, take a few minutes to take some deep breaths and clear your mind.  This is a good time for a quick meditation about your day and your plans for life.  Look at all of the patterns from your day and ask yourself what they mean on a big scale in your life.  If you aren’t ready to go to sleep keep your eyes cracked open just a little so that you do not drift off.
When you are ready to sleep you can also use the relaxation techniques from meditation to help you rest easier.  If you are anything like me you might have troubles sleeping because you are over analysing your day and stressing about tomorrow.
1309035225ca67497801200What I typically end up doing is bringing my attention to only the things inside my room.  If my thoughts are about people, places or events happening outside of my room in that present moment then I tell myself that they don’t exist in this moment.
If that doesn’t calm my mind enough I will go one step further and go into my heart chakra space, deep inside and make the sound of my heart & breathing the only thing in existence.  After that I am able to drift off and sleep deeply.
What are some of your tricks for finding time to meditate & be mindful?  Let us know in the comments!
Thank you for reading,
Kirsten

The Power of Micro-Meditation.

“Meditation is the soul’s perspective glass.” ~ Owen Feltham

Many, many books have been written about meditation.
I’ve read a good number of them, from Zen Buddhist practices to Kundalini yoga. I began meditating at the age of 21. My regular practice was shoddy at times, to say the least. I often felt I couldn’t sacrifice an hour of my day to sit and do nothing. Think nothing. After all, that’s the principle of most meditation practices: Strive to have no thoughts.
When I meditated, a thought arose and my conscious mind said, “That’s bad. I’m supposed to have no thoughts. I have to stretch out the space between thoughts. I suck at this!” And then I had to start over.
It wasn’t until I began studying Dzogchen, a Tibetan Buddhist teaching, that I realized meditation had a much broader definition. In Dzogchen, the idea is to clear the mind of “dual” thoughts. That is, judgments about what is good and bad, worthy and useless, etc. Thoughts will arise—we’re conscious beings—but attach no significance to them.
As Dzogchen master Chögyal Namkhai Norbu says, we should observe thoughts as a mirror reflects images. They are just there. Then they move away. The mirror does not judge the images as right or wrong, good or bad. Other techniques suggest you consider thoughts as you would clouds in the sky. We’d never try to hold onto a cloud. That’s silly. Not to mention impossible.
We let it float across the sky, without judgment. There’s no, “Man, that cloud is stupid.” I don’t know about you, but I found this lesson to be a great relief. Now I could sit, be peaceful, and let my random thoughts float across the sky of my mind, free from the burden of categorizing or valuing them.

It’s with this premise that you can begin your meditation practice.

We’ve established that our regenerative energy needs solitude to thrive. Sometimes our minds become so cluttered with the stresses of our life that no matter what activities we use to unwind and reconnect with Self—reading, writing, seeing a film, taking a bath—the stress never lets us fully recharge. In that way, meditation is a helpful tool.
Now, before you dismiss the idea of meditating as being too lofty for you, give it a try. Even if you’ve tried before and hated it, try again. You may find this helpful: Your meditation sessions don’t have to be an hour long. Or even half an hour. You can start with five minutes. Or two.
A full 120 seconds devoted to clearing the mind and relaxing your body will do wonders for 24 hours straight of daily stress. Besides, even the busiest parent or CEO has the ability let go of the daily grind for 120 seconds.

Micro-Meditation in 10 Steps:

This meditation practice is designed to be done quickly, but keep in mind that it must be done fully, with awareness and positive intention. You’re devoting a minimum of two minutes to your own health. Take it seriously. Ideally you’ll want to practice this meditation every day.
  1. Go to your sacred space. Light your candles and/or incense. Whatever your instincts tell you will help you relax.
  2. Set your clock for the length of time you wish to meditate. Start with two minutes if you wish. Or go for five minutes to start. (Eventually you won’t need to set a clock; you’ll know instinctively when it’s time to stop.)
  3. Sit comfortably on a pillow or chair with a straight back. Don’t lie down or you might fall asleep.
  4. Close your eyes or keep your eyes focused on an object (candle flame, god or goddess statue, inspirational painting, photo of a beloved teacher).
  5. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose and out through your mouth.
  6. Continue deep breathing in this manner until your body naturally begins to breathe calmly on its own.
  7. Now turn your attention to your body. Relax all the muscles you can and still remain upright. Imagine your body dissolving into the air around you.
  8. As thoughts arise, do not judge them or pay attention to them. Let them drift by, like clouds in the sky.
  9. As your time ends, take another cleansing breath—in through the nose and out through the mouth.
  10. You may wish to end with an affirmation or set an intention for your day. Say thank you to yourself, your higher power, The Universe—whatever you feel is a good way to honor your practice.

What Do Meditation And Sex Have In Common?

Orgasms are a result of sensory stimulation that culminates in climactic bliss. It isn't difficult to comprehend why many yearn for such a blissful, albeit fleeting, state.

The goal of any species is to make more copies of itself. From an evolutionary standpoint, orgasm acts as a motivator, a reward, to reproduce. Why? Because physical union is the only means to "spread the seed" for many species. The desire to experience this unique sensation persuades us to reproduce because sex is the gateway to this euphoria. This is why when we are adolescents and young adults, a stage in out life with highest reproductive success, our minds strategically make this sensory gratification such a high priority.

As our reproductive capacity dwindles, so does our instinct to seek out a mate for physical union. While seemingly all animals possess this instinct, there's something special only humans have; the ability to interpret it, not merely experience it.

Now, why is this discussion important to the understanding of our health and well-being? Because understanding the orgasm helps us to understand ourselves. Yes, that is true. Keep reading:

The orgasm carries with it the esteemed connotation of absolute pleasure — it's placed on a pedestal of sexual euphoria. While we like to paint the sensation with graphic undertones of lust, the neurobiology of the climax is far less provocative.

At its core, the orgasm is much less about what it makes us feel than what it allows us NOT to feel. With all of the hype surrounding the sensation, we can't help but wonder: What is it about experiencing an orgasm that keeps us coming back for more?

Pleasure is typified by three things:

An escape from self-awareness: We are liberated from our burdensome egos. The weight of our constant internal criticism is lifted as our self-observer takes a brief hiatus from incessant doubt.

Decreased sense of pain: Relief from pain is an immediate trigger for the sensation of pleasure.

Alteration in bodily perception: Our inhibitions are lowered to the point of bliss. This break from self-scrutiny allows us a passing moment in a heavenly utopia.

The only other time we are able to feel such emancipating ecstasy is during an experience that is seemingly polar opposite to that of orgasm-inducing intercourse — meditation. "Bliss, both sacred and profane, shares the diminution of self-awareness," according to a popular study.

Meditation allows us to experience the trinity of bliss: decreased self-awareness, lowered inhibition, and elimination of pain. The only difference between orgasmic and meditative states is that while sex leads to the physical union of two individuals, meditative processes, like those practiced by Tibetan Buddhist monks, diminish self-awareness by allowing our mind to focus beyond self-identification and shift our focus to the macro universe. Meditation, like the orgasm, allows us to ignore the disruptions of emotion and focus on the experience at hand. In both cases, we are freed from the burden of self-preoccupation.

While the blissful corporal experience resulting from an orgasm has an evolutionary purpose (to make more humanity), the reason behind such a blissful state is due to diminution of self-awareness that can be re-experienced at a mental level by practicing mindful meditation.

Meditation allows us to shift our attention from our ego-driven selves to the world around us. Try to make it a habit to remove the distractions of incessant self-critiquing.

Sacred or profane, the reason behind such a blissful experience is going beyond the confines of self-identification. Expand your awareness. Take time each day to think about the world around you; take a break from always thinking emotionally about yourself.

Five Meaningful Methods of Meditation

In my last article, A Layman’s Guide to Mindful Meditation, we discussed the “why” of meditation. In this article we will discuss the “how.” There’s a myriad of methods for meditation. Some are easy and some are difficult. All require daily practice to perfect. Here are five of the most popular methods of meditation and what they each bring to the Meditation Table. Here’s why You Should Mix them for Maximum Mindfulness.
Mindfulness, or Spiritual Method:
A most popular method comes from Buddhistmeditation practice of Vipassana. It’s all about practicing detachment from each thought and being centered in the “here and now.” It focuses onsituational awareness and “in the moment” presence. There is also a focus on communion with the cosmos, which can translate to prayer, but not necessarily. The best way to commune with the universe is to ask questions as opposed to seeking answers. In the mindfulness method, answers are mere side-effects of good questioning.
How to: One can practice mindfulness in any position, even lying down. The key is presence with the present moment, and clear and concise communion with the cosmos.

Zen or Zazen Method:
Also from the Buddhist tradition, this method is all about simply sitting. It is often done for long periods of time. Its focus is mostly on posture and spine alignment with minimal focus on breathing techniques. It is the most monastic of all the methods and is therefore difficult to make progress in. Most monks practice this method while concentrating on a Zen koan or spiritual parable.
How to: The most effective positioning of the body for the practice of Zazen is the stable, symmetrical position of the seated Buddha. Keeping the back straight and centered, pretend a silver thread is pulled taut through your spine and up through your head, connecting to the ceiling.

Kundalini or Transcendental Method:
This method comes from the Vedanta Hinduism tradition and ties into different forms of Yoga practices. It focuses more on breathing patterns than the previous methods, using the power of breathing to launch one into a higher sense of self, or even a transformation of self. The electromagnetic field created by the human body is akin to the electromagnetic field created by the Earth. Transcendental method is all about tapping into the stream of energy naturally created by the relationship between the human body’s energy chakraswith the environment’s energy vortexes. The main focus of this method is to ride this rising stream into infinity, to learn what needs to be learned, and then to return to the finite realms with new-knowledge in tow.
How to: Breathing is primary. Positioning is secondary. Relax your body, take three deep breaths; then proceed to take deep breaths and hold them for at least ten seconds each. This allows for the oxygen to cleanse the chakras and then release toxins through exhalation, while increasing kundalini energy.
Qigong Method or Movement Method:
This method comes from the Taoist tradition. It is all about hyper-focus on breathing techniques and/or bodily movements to cultivate and maintain life energy. This is the most philosophical of the methods, deriving most of its techniques from martial arts and meditative healing methods. It focuses on moving Qi (life force) through the body through focused breathing, mental techniques, and precise movements. This method is all about the balance and equilibrium of both inner and outer forces.
How to: No matter what Qi exercise you’re doing, imagine the Qi moving through your body as you breathe in an out. As you inhale through your nose, imagine the Qi moving through your body and down to your Lower Dantian, or naval area. As you exhale through your mouth imagine the Qi moving through the rest of your body. Repeat.

Drumming and/or Om Method:
This may be the oldest form of meditation known to humanity. The drumming method is typically used by native and aboriginal cultures, and is generally shamanic in nature. The Om method is traditionally from Vedanta Hinduism, though the sound itself is fairly universal to mankind. These methods focus on breathing and heart rhythm in accordance with, or even dissonance with, the sound and feel of the percussion or mantra.
The heart beat itself is a drum. Breathing is a drum beat that we can control. These two methods are all about transformation through vibration and the awareness of cosmic frequencies. Shamans often use drum meditation to cross physical, mental, and spiritual thresholds. It’s a bridge that carries them to a higher sense of self in accordance with the greater cosmos.
How to: Create a sacred place. Clear your mind. Breathe with intent. If you’re the drummer, infuse your intention into the drum before drumming. Begin playing or listening to the drum. Give yourself a few minutes to fall into rhythm with the beat. Fade your drumming into silence, feeling your body’s response to the beat, then return to the drum. Repeat with clear intent.

There you have it: a minor helping of meditative methods. Each have specific techniques, but they all overlap in various ways. One of the keys to becoming a meditative master is to use all the methods to your advantage, while also allowing for personal creativity by giving your meditation a signature as unique as your own fingerprint.
Remember: the heartbeat that sustains your life is acting on the same frequency that sustains the universe. The heart with which you feel God is the same heart with which God feels you. May the Om be with you.

5 Yoga & Meditation Techniques To Help You Practice Gratitude

To avoid overindulging and getting swept into the fast and ferocious current of social outingsextravagant desserts, and endless champagne cheering, let's make an intelligent game-plan to stay connected to your healthy lifestyle choices and goals this season.
Here are five wonderful yoga techniques to help you stay on your game during holiday festivities. Thanksgiving is such an energetically powerful time of the year—a time to cultivate sincere gratitude for the countless blessings in our lives. Here's how:
1. Walking meditation.
The holidays can be wonderfully overwhelming and sometimes we just need a little break from all of the social events and gatherings. If you find yourself feeling anxious, rushed, or over-extended, give yourself a gift of 10 to 15 minutes. Wherever you are, find a quiet escape (outside, around the block, etc.) to walk in silence.
The simple experience of alternating steps with the left and right foot naturally helps create a meditative state which helps you to become more present and grounded. Be mindful of each step. Allow yourself to notice your surroundings, such as grass, trees, chirping birds, and the sun on your face. To end the walking meditation, gradually come to a stop, and become aware of the feeling of standing still again. Notice how you feel now, compared to how you felt when you started. Take your newfound awareness and calm with you back to your festivities.
2. Prayer twisting.
Since we tend to eat more during the holidays, it's wise to focus on yoga postures that aid in digestion and detoxification. Twisting helps to detoxify our bodies by stimulating our liver and stimulating peristalsis. From crescent pose, rotate your torso, bringing the left elbow on the outside of your right knee.
Bring your palms together in a prayer position and press into them towards the floor, rotating your right shoulder up and back while twisting your upper back. Look towards the ceiling. Keep your right knee bent and keep the hips sinking down towards the floor. Hold for 5 to 8 deep breaths. Repeat on other side.
3. Bow pose.
Laying on your front side helps to bring blood-flow to your digestive organs, aiding in better digestion and assimilation of your food. Lie on your stomach with your feet hip-width apart and your arms along the sides of your body. Bend your knees and hold your ankles. Breathing in, lift your chest off the ground and pull your legs up and back. Look straight ahead, preferably with a smile on your face. After 5-8 deep breaths, gently bring your legs and chest to the ground. Release your ankles and relax. Repeat two more times.
4. Concentrated yogi bicycles.
  • Lie on your back. Lace your fingers behind your head. Keep your knees bent together above your hips.
  • Keeping your knees bend, sit up slightly. This is your inhale position.
  • As you exhale, try to touch the outside of your right arm to the outside of your left thigh while straightening your right leg. d) As you inhale, straighten your core and bring your knee back above your hips.
  • Repeat c on the other side.
  • Repeat 10 times, slowly, on each side.
  • Finish with concentrated bicycles: 1) Twice as fast in speed and 2) half the extension in your legs. Ex: Instead of extending the opposite leg while twisting, simply touch the toes of that foot to the floor or mat, keeping the knee bend. Repeat 20 times each side.
5. Gratitude meditation.
Cultivating and practicing gratitude can reduce symptoms of mild to moderate depression and anxiety, resulting in better mood and sleep. Practicing gratitude can also lead to increases in optimism, vitality, happiness, a sense of wellbeing, and a greater satisfaction with life and relationships. The holidays can be joyous for some and stressful, or even lonely for others.
In both cases, practicing thankfulness (even in times of adversity) helps one to seek and find a “silver lining” in all of their experiences. Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight and your eyes closed. Being to take deep, slow breaths. Once you feel centered and present, mentally list five things you are grateful for in your life and give your thankfulness to those people and/or things.
